The Psychology of Light: How Lighting Affects Your Mood

In our fast-paced lives, surrounded by the buzz of technology and the constant hum of daily routines, there's a silent influencer that often goes unnoticed: lighting. Whether we realize it or not, the quality and type of lighting around us play a significant role in shaping our emotions, productivity, and overall well-being. The psychology of light is a fascinating field that the explores depths of neuroscience and how different lighting choices can affect our mood, productivity, and mental health.

As experts in the field of lighting, Light of the World Electric understands the profound impact lighting can have on our daily lives and we can help YOU live more productive, positive lives.

The Science Behind Lighting and Mood

Lighting isn't just about visibility; it's about how our brains interpret and respond to the light we're exposed to. Natural light, for instance, has been proven to elevate mood and increase productivity. Its dynamic changes throughout the day help regulate our circadian rhythms, keeping our internal clocks in sync and promoting healthier sleep patterns.

Conversely, artificial lighting, when poorly designed or overly harsh, can have detrimental effects. Glaring fluorescent lights or insufficiently bright spaces can lead to feelings of fatigue, irritability, and even contribute to headaches. The color temperature of light also plays a crucial role; warmer tones (like those mimicking sunset) tend to promote relaxation, while cooler, bluish tones can enhance alertness and concentration.

Sally Augustin, Ph.D. writes in Psychology Today, “Warm lights are great for creating a cozy, relaxing atmosphere, one where we have a good time socializing with other people and are apt to think more creatively, while cool lights are best for times when we need to feel alert or active and when we need to really concentrate. Do your taxes in cool light, write poetry and hang out with friends in warmer light. Dimmer lighting also is more relaxing and better for casual hanging out than brighter lights.”

Color Temperature of Light Bulbs

Below are a few visuals of what "warm light" and "cool light" might mean. The color of light is measured in Kelvins (K). The lower the number, the warmer the light, and the higher the number, the cooler the light.

  • Less than 2000K: Emits a dim glow similar to a candlelight.
  • 2000K - 3000K: Gives off a soft white glow, oftentimes appearing yellow.
  • 3100K - 4500K: Emits a bright amount of white light.
  • 4600K - 6500K: Similar to daylight, this lighting appears blue-white in color and is very bright.
  • 6500K and up: Gives off a bright blue hue of light.

Which Light Temperature is Best for You?

There are many factors to consider when deciding which lighting is best for you and your unique needs. LOTW Electric is here for you to help you determine which lighting will suit your needs the best if you are needing help. Here are a few things to consider when choosing your lighting.

  • What type of room am I putting this lighting into?
  • What is the ambiance I want to create in this environment?
  • How do I want people to feel when they are in this room?

Once you have answered those three questions, use this guide to help you determine which color lighting to choose.

  • Homes, libraries, and restaurants will typically choose a warm white light (around 2700K) as it provides a space that feels friendly, personal, and intimate.

  • Homes, hotel rooms, lobbies, and retail stores may choose a soft white glow (around 3000K) to invoke a soft, warm, and pleasing feeling in their visitors.

  • Executive offices, reception areas, and supermarkets may want to opt for a neutral glow around 3500K to create an environment that is sociable, inviting, and non-threatening.

  • Offices, classrooms, mass merchandisers, and showrooms will often choose a light closer to daylight at 4000K for a space that appears neat, clean, and efficient.

  • Hospitals, galleries, beauty salons, and the graphics industry will likely want to choose lighting around 5000K for high productivity, that is bright, cool, and tends to keep visitors alert and focused.

Creating the Right Atmosphere

At Light of the World Electric, we believe that thoughtful lighting design isn't just about functionality; it's about crafting environments that enhance human experience. Whether it's a residential setting, a commercial space, or a community area, the right lighting can transform a space into a sanctuary, a hub of creativity, or a place of rejuvenation.

In homes, strategic use of dimmers and fixtures can create cozy corners for relaxation or bright, vibrant spaces for socializing. In offices, well-placed task lighting can reduce eye strain and improve focus, boosting overall productivity. Even outdoor environments benefit from carefully planned lighting, creating inviting pathways or highlighting architectural features.

With ever-improving technology, lighting design has become more versatile to fit more uses in one fixture. You can use Smart Devices and Smart Lights to turn your bathroom lights from a high Kelvin, bright light fixture, best for applying makeup and grooming, to a warm, deep red of 1500K to invoke a relaxing environment while in the bathtub. These Smart Lights can be a convenient addition to your home or office space when you want the emotions of the room to change or when you would prefer to shut the lights off with your voice or phone. Our associates at Light of the World Electric are happy to help you choose which option may be best for you.
