Everything you need to know (and want to know) about landscape lighting!

Today, we're diving into the art and science of landscape lighting, because when the sun sets over the majestic Pikes Peak Region of Colorado, your outdoor spaces should continue to shine. If you are asking yourself, "Is landscape lighting worth the investment?", keep reading to find out.

Landscape lighting has become essential for enhancing outdoor spaces, providing both functionality and ambiance. Here are some main features and types to consider when designing landscape lighting:

Types of Landscape Lighting

  •  Pathway Lighting: Lights positioned along walkways or driveways for safety and visibility, often set low to the ground.

  •  Spotlights and Uplighting: Focused lighting used to highlight specific features like trees, sculptures, or architectural elements.

  •  Downlighting: Lights positioned high up, casting light downwards to simulate natural light or create a moonlight effect.

  •  Floodlights: Wide-beam lights that cover larger areas, ideal for illuminating larger trees or building facades.

  •  Deck and Step Lights: Small fixtures built into stairs, decks, or retaining walls to enhance safety and ambiance around outdoor spaces.

  •   In-ground Lights: Subtle lights set into the ground to illuminate pathways, driveways, or garden features without prominent fixtures.

  •  Wall Wash Lighting: Lighting placed close to walls or other surfaces to create an even, soft glow that highlights texture and color.

  • Permanent Holiday Lighting: Lighting installed on the exterior of your home as a permanent fixture with the ability to adjust color, brightness, and even schedules for your convenience, security, and enjoyment.

2. Light Quality and Brightness Control

  • LED Lighting: Energy-efficient, durable, and available in a range of color temperatures, from warm to cool.

  • Dimmable Options: Many systems now offer dimmable lighting to customize brightness based on the time of day or occasion.

  • Color Control: Some lighting setups allow color-changing features to adjust the ambiance or for seasonal decoration.

3. Weatherproofing and Durability

  • Waterproof Materials: Lights are generally rated as waterproof or water-resistant to withstand elements like rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.

  • Durability: High-quality materials like stainless steel or heavy-duty plastic ensure the lighting withstands the outdoors over time.

4. Power Source and Control

  • Solar-Powered Lights: Ideal for energy-saving, solar lights work well in sunny areas and are often used for pathway and accent lighting.

  • Low Voltage Systems: Common in landscape lighting, low-voltage (12V) lights are energy-efficient and safe for outdoor use.

  • Smart Controls: Integration with home automation allows for remote control, scheduled lighting, or motion-sensor activation through apps or smart home systems.

5. Layering and Placement

  • Creating Depth: Using multiple lighting layers, such as combining spotlights with pathway lights, adds dimension and guides the eye through the landscape.

  • Strategic Positioning: Thoughtful placement to highlight the most attractive features and avoid glare or light pollution helps create an elegant look.

6. Safety and Security Features

  • Motion-Activated Lighting: Useful for illuminating spaces only when needed, offering both energy savings and increased security.

  • Timers and Dusk-to-Dawn Sensors: Automatically control when the lights come on and off, ensuring they work only when needed.

7. Sustainability and Energy Efficiency

  • LED and Solar Options: Using energy-efficient lights, particularly LED and solar-powered fixtures, reduces the environmental impact and cost.

  • Dark-Sky Compliance: Light fixtures designed to minimize upward light spillage, reducing light pollution and preserving night-sky visibility.

1. Enhance Your Home's Aesthetic Appeal

Landscape lighting isn't just about functionality; it's about creating ambiance and enhancing the beauty of your home. Whether you have a sprawling estate or a cozy cottage, strategically placed lights can accentuate architectural features, highlight unique landscaping elements, and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Imagine a gentle wash of light on your garden path or soft uplighting showcasing your favorite trees against the backdrop of the Rockies.

Studies have found that professionally installed landscape lighting can increase the resale value of your home from anywhere between 2% to a whopping 30%! Therefore, the return on investment (ROI) of landscape lighting can be incredibly high.

Below, you can see a lighting upgrade that was done by one of Light of the World's expert associates in Northern Colorado Springs. Permanent holiday lights were installed on the home as well as landscape lighting around the client's property. This upgrade brought incredible curbside appeal to this customer's home in addition to convenience.
